Safer Settings for All Ages

We tailor our chat settings and content access to allow users to connect and create in age-appropriate settings. Chat is only available to users who have completed an age check. Our default settings are designed to help keep users safe, but we acknowledge that no system is perfect. We encourage all parents to have conversations with their children about interacting safely online. You can use our parent resources to help inform these conversations. 

Age Groups

Experience Chat

Default Setting: Chat is OFF. If you choose to enable chat for your child under 9, they will be restricted to in-game chat with other users under 13-years-old and trusted friends. Chat is available only through text. Users under 9 years old cannot access Voice Chat. Text filters and chat rephrasing are in place to keep chat age-appropriate. All chat is monitored for child exploitation.

Minimal & Mild: Access to experiences labeled Minimal and Mild. Great for younger users exploring in a safe and creative space.

Experience Chat

Default Setting: Experience Chat is ON. Direct Experience Chat is OFF. You can update your child’s default chat settings at any time using parental controls. If you would like to permit your child to chat in games, they will be able to do so with other users under 16 years old and trusted friends. Messaging is by text only. Voice is not available to users in this age group. Strong safety filters and Chat Rephrasing will be used to keep chats safe and appropriate. All chat is monitored for child exploitation. 

Party Chat

Default Setting: Trusted friends only. Users ages 9-12 can chat outside of games (Party Chat) with trusted friends one-on-one or in a group of six after receiving parental consent. At any time, parents can choose to turn Party Chat on for all friends under 16 or off for everyone. Messages are text only. Users in this age group cannot access voice chat. All chat is monitored for child exploitation.

Up to Moderate: Access to Minimal, Mild, and Moderate experiences, providing more variety while keeping the environment safe and age-appropriate.

Experience Chat

Default Setting: Chat is ON. Users who are 13-15 can chat in games with users aged 9-17 and trusted friends. This includes publicly visible real-time chats (Experience Chat) and one-on-one chats in games. Both text and voice chat options are available. Safety filters and chat rephrasing are in place. All chat is monitored for child exploitation. 

Party Chat

Default Setting: Chat is ON. Users 13-15 years of age can chat more with friends aged 9-17 or trusted friends. Party Chat for this age group is text only with friends or trusted friends. Voice chat is available for trusted friends. Party Chat for this age group has less-restrictive filters, but all chat is monitored for child exploitation.

Voice chat is available for trusted friends. Party Chat for this age group has less-restrictive filters, but all chat is monitored for child exploitation.

Party Chat

Default Setting: Chat is ON. Users who are verified as 18+ years of age can chat with users 16+ and trusted friends inside or outside of games. Text and Voice are available. All chat is monitored for child exploitation.

Content

Full Access: Age-checked users 18 and older can access all experiences, including those with Restricted labels.

Our maturity labels are grounded in child development research and informed by industry standards. Parents can use their Parental controls to restrict their child’s access to content based maturity labels and what makes sense for their family.
