Moving Beyond Self-Reported Age

Roblox Unlocks Age-Based Co-play and Discovery

One month ago, we took a bold step toward the digital future by requiring age checks to chat. As we’re reporting in today’s shareholder letter, 45% of our 144 million daily active users globally have already completed an age check with either Facial Age Estimation or ID verification. This rapid response reinforces our decision to go beyond the industry standard of self-reported age to better support civil, age-appropriate communication.

More accurate age information helps Roblox deliver age-appropriate experiences and functionality to our users, including chat. For the first time, we are reporting age-checked cohorts: Among age-checked daily active users, 35% are younger than 13, 38% are age 13 to 17, and 27% are 18 or older.* These numbers may evolve as more users age-check. These cohorts provide us with a foundation to innovate and grow the platform, allowing us to deliver tailored, high-utility experiences for every age group. For more information about our demographic reporting, please visit our shareholder letter

Because no system is perfect, we’ve implemented ways for users who’ve made a mistake to update their age (for example, a parent who inadvertently completed the age-check process for their child). In addition to ID Verification, users 18 or older now have a one-time reset option in their Account Settings, to re-do their age-check. Parents also have a one-time opportunity to correct their child’s age via Parental Controls.

Experiences are better when playing with friends, family, and others around the same age. We continue to optimize our matchmaking system to help users find those they can play and chat with. This also helps keep chat, the social heart of an experience, high quality and age-appropriate. We believe the number of eligible chat users in every age group will continue to grow and we’re reminding users 13 or older that they can add family and friends as Trusted Connections so they can chat regardless of age group. In the coming months, we’ll roll out Trusted Connections for users younger than 13 (with parental oversight) and automatically make any linked parent or caregiver a Trusted Connection of their child, so they can chat with their child across age groups.

We’re evolving Experience Chat with new activity indicators that signal active conversations across all age groups while upholding our rigorous safety standards. This innovation maintains community energy and provides social context, encouraging non-age-checked players to check their age.

Behind the scenes, we continuously evaluate user behavior, leveraging multiple signals to determine if someone is significantly older or younger than their profile says they are. For example, the system might detect that a user who has self-reported or age-checked as a younger child has a pattern of gameplay over time that indicates they may actually be a teen or adult. If the system detects this type of mismatch, the user will see a prompt requiring them to complete an additional age check.

We believe that a safe, civil environment builds trust and helps us continue to grow the platform, and high-quality, age-appropriate content helps drive global user engagement. As with any significant change, it will take time for users to adapt to our new age-check requirement. With our community's feedback, we continue to optimize Roblox to deliver positive, age-appropriate experiences. We’re more committed than ever to connecting a billion people of all ages with optimism and civility.
